When to go

A few, though top-quality kilometres along this South Tyrolean route, perfect for stretching your legs in comfort, using a Max Flite Gel Flow saddle by Selle Italia.

From Ortisei to Castelrotto and back again through the little-known Pinei Pass, covers just 23 km, but the route is perfect for those staying in the Val Gardena with their bike in tow, who want to increase their fitness, perhaps with a few shuttles, in preparation for more demanding rides.

The limited length of this route makes it a splendid choice for an outing with a saddle that privileges seating comfort, like the Max Flite Gel Flow by Selle Italia, with its anatomical cut combined with a layer of gel.

The Pinei Pass (1,475 m above sea level) is actually quite short (5 km) with a moderate vertical climb (650 m if you add the return journey on the two sides), but it is very tough, with a couple of stretches at 15%. It also has the advantage of being less busy than its bigger “brothers” (Sella, Pordoi, etc.).

In short, the climb up to the Pass starts directly from Ortisei (BZ), and it is really tough right from the start, so it’s a good idea to be prepared for it because there is no time to get warmed up. Once you reach the top, you then swoop downwards on the other side with a wonderful descent on a perfect road surface, surrounded by green fields as far as the eye can see.

You soon reach Castelrotto (BZ), an ancient village in the district of the Alpe di Siusi, among the most characteristic in South Tyrol.

Just enough time to fill your flask at the 16th century fountain in the church square and then, before your legs get cold again, wisely get back on the saddle immediately and start the climb back up to the Pass from this side before making your way down again to Ortisei.
